Biographical Statement

Thomas J. Pillar, EdD has been a superintendent for eighteen years. In 1992, he became superintendent of the Chippewa Hills School District, Remus, Michigan, and in 2002 was named superintendent of Waverly Community Schools, Lansing, Michigan.

Dr. Pillar spent the first twenty-three years of his career with the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit as a high school English teacher and department head, elementary principal, high school principal, and associate superintendent.

He has experience in urban, suburban and rural education settings.

Dr. Pillar also has done extensive work with school accreditation through the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools, the University of Michigan Bureau of Accreditation and School Improvement Studies, the Michigan Department of Education Accreditation Program, and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools known today as AdvancEd Worldwide.

He has published articles that focus on the relationship between the board of education and superintendent. He has also presented on K-12 emergency response planning for the National Association of School Boards.

In addition, Dr. Pillar has managed several large construction projects that involved new construction as well as extensive renovation of multiple sites.

Dr. Pillar is a Regional Representative and on the adjunct staff of the Michigan Association of School Boards; has served as chairperson of the Ingham County Superintendents’ Round Table and the Northern Michigan School Legislative Association; and was a member of the Ferris State University Honors College Advisory Board. He is also the founder of A Plus Educational Consulting, Inc.

The Michigan Association of School Administrators selected Dr. Pillar as the Region Six Superintendent of the Year for 2010.

Dr. Pillar earned his Bachelor, Master and Doctorate Degrees from Wayne State University in Detroit.
